Trend Forward Farmhouse Design Just Makes Sense

March 6th, 2018

We all know that farmhouse design is now fashionable. But, why? Is it because Chip and Joanna Gaines made it that way? Well, yes, we cannot deny that is part of it. However, the real reason seems to be that it just makes sense to most people. It feels fresh, bright and inviting. It brings the outdoors in to our otherwise busy indoor lives. And, it feels open and uncluttered which we could all use a bit more of.

One of the greatest design trends, that I do not see going away anytime soon, is the idea of seamless living with the outdoors. This just makes sense, especially in the warmer climates of the south.  The outdoor lounge, as we call it, extends the living space of your home creating blurred lines between the interior and exterior entertaining areas. Builders Design was so pleased to bring this fabulous element to The Providence Group at their Chelsea Walk model home in Alpharetta which is walking distance to Avalon where more outdoor fun can be had.

In addition to wanting that seamless living with the outdoors, we certainly cannot ignore the beauty and feeling that is created with an updated, farmhouse style kitchen. Can I just say WOW about the stunning, yet simple backsplash designs we are seeing now? The idea of light and bright kitchens with great hood designs, the “everything island”, open shelving and an overall uncluttered aesthetic sets the mood for a welcoming environment. The open concept floorplan has allowed entertaining to become easier when you pair an expertly designed and appointed kitchen with expanded wine or cocktail storage in other locations of the home.

Now, let’s talk about what makes a home light and bright. It all starts with lots of big windows that are uncluttered from oversized drapery and blinds. The Providence Group does not shy away from adding as many windows as possible in a space in order to provide tons of natural light in each room. The next step is gorgeous, statement lighting fixtures. Whether that is one large scale light, or groupings of lights is really up to the look you are trying to achieve. You can see some examples of statement lighting fixtures in the new Traditions model home where we added a stunning pendant grouping against a mirrored wall in the stairwell…what a focal point in this home. Focusing particular attention to the design and scale of your fixtures will either make or break a space that otherwise has great design elements.

Whether you are watching your favorite design show on TV, or lucky enough to be designing your own home, the current Farmhouse design trend is still in fashion and will be for a very long time. Like any good style, though, it will evolve with time, and by the people interpreting it. However, the great feelings it brings forth will always stay hip and current.
