Spring Clean Like a Pro: Best Tips for a Spotless Home

White daffodils swaying in the breeze, birds chirping in the morning, and longer sunny days signify one thing: the first day of spring is almost here! As the Georgia pollen gears up to blanket your home and car in its familiar yellow dust, focusing your efforts on your home’s interior is an excellent way to get ahead of spring cleaning. 95% of American households engage in spring cleaning, and 74% report doing so every year (source). With the right tips and tricks, you can tackle it like a pro and have your new home from The Providence Group sparkling in no time. Grab your cleaning supplies and dive into our ultimate spring cleaning guide!

Step 1: Prep for Spring Cleaning Success

Before you break out the rubber gloves and spray bottles, create a spring cleaning action plan. Take a walk through your home and make a list of all the areas that need attention. Divide your tasks into manageable chunks, such as cleaning one room at a time or focusing on specific tasks like decluttering, dusting, and deep cleaning carpets or upholstery. Having a plan will help you stay organized, combat anxiety or overwhelming feelings, and ensure that no corner of your home is left untouched.

After the cleaning plan is set, double-check that you have the right tools. Stock up on cleaning supplies and products. Must-haves like microfiber cloths, all-purpose cleaners, glass cleaners, and disinfectant wipes are great, or you can DIY natural cleaning supplies to be more eco-friendly. A high-powered vacuum cleaner, broom & dust pan, and a mop are essential to keep your floors sparkling. Once you have everything you need, you can get started. Doing this step saves you time and makes cleaning much more efficient.

Step 2: Declutter Like Marie Kondo

One of the first steps to a successful spring cleaning session is decluttering. Channel your inner Marie Kondo and ask yourself while assessing each item, "Does this spark joy?" If the answer is no, it's time to let it go. Decluttering will free up space in your home, allow for better organization, and create a more calming environment that isn’t full of things you don’t want. Donate or discard items you no longer use or need to local businesses and non-profit organizations. In Georgia, places like Habitat for Humanity® and the Furniture Bank of Metro Atlanta are great resources for donating large furniture pieces for a great cause.

Step 3: Try These Deep Cleaning Tips & Tricks

Work each room from top to bottom to stay organized with your spring cleaning efforts. Start by dusting ceiling fans, light fixtures, and shelves before moving on to furniture and countertops. This way, any dust or debris that falls to the ground will be cleaned up as you work your way down. Don't forget to dust behind and underneath furniture – those forgotten corners can harbor a surprising amount of dust and dirt. Take the time to clean the small details like light switches, doorknobs, and baseboards to really give your home a polished finish. If needed, wash curtains and wipe down the walls to remove any smudges or fingerprints.

Step 4: Don’t Clean Alone, Make it Fun!

Spring cleaning doesn't have to feel like a major chore – turn up the music, enlist the help of family, and make it a fun activity. Consider trying these unique tricks now and during National Cleaning Week (March 24 – 30, 2024):

  • Set a timer and see how much you can accomplish in a certain amount of time
  • Reward yourself with a tasty treat after completing each task
  • Involve your children in the process for extra assistance and an easy way to teach them proper cleaning and hygiene rules for the house
